Chinese Minor
Overview of Program
Students minoring in Mandarin Chinese will complete 18 credits in the language, starting at the beginning level or higher. For more information about the credit requirements for this minor, visit the course catalog. Courses in Chinese can count toward the Asian Studies Concentration.
Why study Chinese?
- Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world with over 1.2 billion speakers in China, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
- Not only is China’s economy one of the most important economies in the world, but interest in the language and the culture has increased with more tourists than ever visiting the home of the language.
- The Chinese language can be heard throughout the world, and with its official language status in 6 countries as well as being one of the six official languages of the United Nations, it is no wonder that millions of people are investing in learning the language
Chinese Courses
- Beginning Chinese I & II
- A learner-based, performance-based and task-based approach to Chinese, this course focuses on the development of the students’ ability to comprehend and communicate in the Chinese language. It provides training in the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Introduces aspects of Chinese culture.
- Intermediate Chinese I & II
- Emphasizes development of the full range of language skills – reading, listening comprehension, the use of grammatical structures, and oral and written communication.
- Advanced Chinese I & II
- An integrated, learner-focused course that develops reading, writing, listening and speaking along with cultural competency.
Independent studies and readers may be available upon request.
Scholarships to Study Chinese Abroad
If you are interested in scholarships to study Chinese in Taiwan, there are several scholarships available that University of 51视频 students and alumni have joined in past years.
The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is a two, three, six, or nine month scholarship available for students who want to engage in Chinese immersion language and culture study. More information on the scholarship is available as well as the guidelines and application.
The Taiwan Fellowship and Scholarship is open to students enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate degree.
