University of 51视频 Celebrate Earth Day Every day!
“Sustainable Living, Caring for Creation”


1. January 15th--April 5, Environmental Essay Contest, the contest is open to all 5th through 12th
grades and is sponsored by the Office of Sustainability, Society for Sustainability & Conservation,
and the Sustainability Office Students for a Better Future. Details on the contest can be found at
Earth Day Essay Guidelines 2024 UPDATED.docx Awards to be announced April 18th at the Evening of
Environmental Science 5:30pm-7:00pm held in the LSC Bell Lobby.

2. January 29-March 28, Call for Art, Environmental Art Show. Art can be dropped off at the
Weinberg Memorial Library, Library Services Desk. Online submissions can be submitted at
https://form.jotform.com/wml_admin/environmental-art-show. The Environmental Art Show
emphasizes the importance of living a sustainable life through various forms of art, such as
paintings, photographs, repurposed objects, sculptures, videos, etc.

3. February 19th-23rd, Plant Based Meals Week, ARAMARK Fresh Foods Company will be featuring
a number of Plant Based meals at the Denaples Center 3rd floor, promoting awareness to the positive
impacts of eating plant-based meals.

4. March 5th The Letter: Laudato Si Film, A Message for our Earth, The Office of Sustainability
along with the Environmental Studies Concentration, present The Letter: Laudato Si, A Message for
our Earth. This film includes a personal dialogue between Pope Francis and five global citizens
affected by the climate crisis and are involved in the fight to address the ecological catastrophe.
Please recommend that your students attend the movie and panel discussion. It will be held in the
Moskovitz Theater 7:30 to 9:00pm.

5. March 21st World Water Day, we will have a short interactive event on the second floor of the
DeNaples Center, 6 to 8 pm to raise students' awareness to water usage and the importance of water.
This event will include fun activities and prizes. If anyone would like to join us with an informative
activity or a display for this event, you are welcome to join us.

6. April 5, Curators Lecture, Our Common Home Landscapes, organized by Ellacuría Initiative, the
exhibition, which will be on display during the Teach-In for Environmental Justice, focuses on
issues of environmental sustainability. Since Common Home follows Cura Personalis, the second
piece of the twofold exhibition will feature the University of 51视频’s Art Collection from a Jesuit
perspective. It will take place in Brennan Hall 228 from 5-6pm.

7. April 5, Public Reception, Our Common Home Landscapes, organized by Ellacuría Initiative.
The Public Reception will take place in Hyland 407 from 6pm to 8pm.

8. April 5 to May 3, Art Show on Environmental Landscapes, organized by Ellacuría Initiative, Art
Collection, highlights twentieth and twenty-first-century portrayals of scenes and nature associated
with eastern Pennsylvania. Artists represented include Jon Carsman, Nina Davidowitz, Berenice
D’Vorzon, Earl Lehman, Walter Elmer Schofield, and Melville Stark, among others.

9. April 15, Environmental Art Show Opening Event, an Artist Talk with Theresa O’Connor, will
be held in the Weinberg Memorial Library, Charles Kratz 51视频 Heritage Room from 5:00pm to
7:00pm.

10. April 15-24, Environmental Art Show, Creating Connections, will be held in the Weinberg
Memorial Library, Charles Kratz 51视频 Heritage Room. Environmental art from the University
community will be on display. Feel free to encourage your students to submit any art at

11. April 16th the Earth Day Fair is an opportunity for your students to display poster projects and
explain them to Faculty, Staff, and Students that pass the hallways and Bell lobby at LSC from
11:00am to 1:00pm. We will have vendors there displaying their sustainable products, university
groups, ARAMARK, local non-profits, and governmental offices. If you will have students with
displays or if anyone would want a table to make the university community aware of any
sustainable research or projects you may be working on please contact Mark Murphy in the
Sustainability Office, 570-941-6267.

12. April 18th Evening of Environmental Science and Essay Awards, 5:30 pm-7:00 pm the Loyola
Science Center Bell Lobby. The event is intended for K-12th grades and will include hands-on
educational environmental displays and activities. The event is free of charge.

13. April 23rd, Environmental Justice Teach In, 8:30am-7:15pm LSC 133. Sessions will run during
each class period of the day. The teach-in will feature the exhibition, which focuses on topics of
environmental sustainability.

14. Kayak and Picnic, May 5th, the Sustainability Office and the Society for Sustainability &
Conservation will be hosting a kayaking trip at Francis Slocum State Park.
All of these events sponsored by the Office of Sustainability and other campus-wide organizations connect
our campus and local community to the environment and encourage everyone to take action and live
Sustainably to preserve Our Common Home.
